Professional Rodeo Coming to Palm Beach County March 30 & 31

Palm Beach International Raceway

17047 Beeline Highway

Jupiter FL 33478

Florida’s cowboys and cowgirls finally have a professionally sanctioned rodeo  thanks to the 1st annual South Florida Rodeo.  On March 30 & 31 the racecars at the Palm Beach International Raceway will silence their engines and make room for this exciting and fun competition, featuring prizes of $3,000 or more per event  as well as points towards the grand prize trophy SFR belt buckle.

Samantha Carter and Kelli Thomas, two Jupiter Farms businesswomen and equestrians, organized The South Florida Rodeo, LLC, in 2011 after hearing from local cowboys about how few opportunities they had to qualify for regional and national rodeo competitions.  “We have so many talented barrel-racers, ropers, and riders here in Florida who get shut out of the bigger rodeos because they can’t qualify without spending weeks on the road,” said Carter.  “This local rodeo is sanctioned by the Professional Cowboy Association and will give our cowboys a better shot at the big prizes.”

The PCA is the largest professional rodeo association east of the Mississippi River, and – according to the website – they ensure that their events are of the highest quality for participants, spectators, and animals, alike.  Cowboys and cowgirls compete for the grand prize, which exceeds $140,000, at the final rodeo held every January.  Competitors work all year to qualify in one or more of eight events:  bareback riding, saddle bronco riding, steer wrestling, team roping, calf roping, breakaway roping, barrel racing and bull riding.  Only the top 15 competitors, determined by point accumulations or cash winnings in their chosen events, qualify for the PCA Rodeo Finals.

“We are supporting our local police by giving a portion of ticket sales to the PBC Police Benevolent Association,” said Thomas.  “We also have set aside some free booth space to non-profit organizations, such as school groups and charities.  There is room for a large number of vendors at PBI Raceway, so this is a great opportunity to showcase the best of Palm Beach County.”  Sponsorships are also important, she says.  “It’s a great way for a business to give back to the local community, and our competitors really appreciate the support.”

“Another charity we are supporting is Cowboys and Cowgirls for a Cause,” said Carter.  “They help veterans returning home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”  Carter and Thomas hope to give this group and the PBC Benevolent Association a sizeable donation so they are working hard to publicize this event.

Cattle ranching is one of Florida’s oldest agricultural businesses dating back almost 500 years.  At present, the cattle population in our state is over 1.5 million, making Florida the 18th largest cattle ranching state in the US, according to Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  “That means we have lots of cowboys who deserve a chance to compete for big rodeo prizes,” said Carter.  “Our rodeo is a way to celebrate the cowboys and cowgirls who make sure we have plenty of beef in our supermarkets,” she continued.  “We are aiming high with our rodeo – we want to earn PCA’s ‘Rodeo of the Year’ award!”
