The following information is from a Department of Environmental Protection agent in Tallahassee.

The sandhill crane is protected by both the Federal Goverment and the State of Florida.  Apparently the Florida crane is a subspecies and is currently listed as ‘threatened’ in Florida. I believe that threatening them is a misdemeanor. Here’s a number for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 561-625-5122.   I think the Florida subspecies is also protected under the Feds as it is listed as “endangered.”  Here’s the number for the Fish and Wildlife Service in your county, 561-732-3684.

Today, on 75th Ave. North,  we witnessed a white male driving a silver compact (maybe a Nissan or similar), with loud rap music playing.  Three sandhill cranes were crossing the street and this car narrowly missed hitting two of them!!  He had no intention of slowing or stopping for them!!

As a reminder, please please please slow down and stop for these birds when they are crossing the street.   Please let your neighbors know also, especially if they have young drivers in their household.

  CRIME REPORTS

Jupiter Farms and Country Estates

  Crime Report Stats  May 2012

Jupiter Farms crime is UP.  About half are at night and our COP can’t spot that activity. Tell your friends and neighbors about this. There is a little cluster … 162nd and 164th and on Mellon.

Also, at Sewalls Point in Martin County.  Large Miami gangs are coming up with stolen landscaping trailers and utility company trucks and they are breaking in 9AM to 3PM.  Now there are plans to really run them out of there.  So, the question is, where to?  Keep your eyes open, be on the lookout for anyone cruising your neighborhood looking for opportunities. Keep garage doors and gates closed. That may discourage them from your property.

Watch the landscaper trailers. Look for equipment… listen to make sure you hear mowers and weed eaters. Look hard and carefully and take your time.  You know what companies are normally in Jupiter Farms and if you see trucks you have never seen before… pay extra attention.  If you see something that really looks out of place. Call 911.

Same with Utility company’s trucks. Just watch to see where the workmen are and what they are doing.
